Stroke. Slice through a head showing a hemorrhage (colored red), an area of internal bleeding, in the cerebellum of the brain. The nose and two maxillary sinuses (black) are at upper center, with the jaw muscles (brown) just below. Above the cerebellum is the brainstem (white). The bleeding has led to a stroke, the death of brain tissue due to an impaired blood (and therefore oxygen) supply. Strokes or cerebrovascular accidents (CVA), are a major cause of death in developed countries. The bleeding is usually brought on by hypertension (high blood pressure). If they aren't fatal, cerebellar strokes may affect balance and muscular coordination.
