Telescope at La Silla Observatory, located on La Silla mountain, a 2400-meter high mountain bordering the southern extremity of Chile's Atacama desert, one of the driest places on earth. The observatory is run by the ESO (European Southern Observatory), an intergovernmental research organization for astronomy. Although it hosts eighteen telescopes, only three are still in use.
