A solar prominence visible during an annular solar eclipse. Annular eclipses occur when variations in the moon's orbit carry it far enough from the earth that its silhouette will not completely block out the sun. The prominence picured here is 40,000 miles long, a cloud of ionized gas projecting above the surface of the sun but held more or less in place by its magnetic field.
