Cerro Paranal, a mountain in the Atacama Desert of Chile is home to some of the world's leading telescopes. Paranal is one of the world's finest sites for astronomical observations. It is the location of four 8-meter telescopes of the VLT (Very Large Telescope). Photographed in this image are smaller auxiliary telescopes (each one meter in diameter) of the VLT interferometer. The Great Carina Nebula is captured in the sky along with several other nebulae and stars clusters in the Milky Way, and the rising stars of the Southern Cross. October 2011.
