Penzias and Wilson (right), US astrophysicists, at Bell Laboratories standing by the Horn radio antenna in Holmdel, NJ. It was this antenna that they had used from 1963-4, unexpectedly discovering the universe's microwave background radiation. This remnant of the 'big bang' origin of the universe was predicted in 1948 by Gamow and Herman. Arno Allan Penzias (born 1933) and Robert Woodrow Wilson (born 1936) had discovered key evidence for the Big Bang. Penzias and Wilson were awarded the Nobel Prize in 1978 for their work.
