Jupiter and its moon Io, as observed by the New Horizons spacecraft on January 8, 2007. Io, one of the four largest Jovian moons, is the white dot below center right. The Great Red Spot is seen on the planet at left of Io. This image was obtained with the Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) from a distance of 81 million kilometers. New Horizons is flying past Jupiter in early 2007 as part of a gravity assist maneuver to increase its speed and change its trajectory to reach Pluto in 2015. While passing Jupiter, scientists will test its instruments and use them to study Jupiter's weather patterns. Initial observations indicate that the weather is calmer than on previous missions.
