Silver Arawana / arowana / Bony-tongued FISH (Osteoglossum bicirrhosum). Found in the Amazon River basin and Guyana where they inhabit slow moving shallow waters. They are mouth brooders with the male incubating the eggs and young in his mouth for 60 days. They are related to the primitive fishes of the Jurassic era. The barbels have taste receptors which assist in finding food. The barbels of the male help coax young back into the safety of the mouth.
