European rabbit. (Oryctolagus cuniculus). Akaroa Banks Peninsula - New Zealand. Rabbits were brought into New Zealand probably from Australia in the 1830s to provide game for hunting, food and to remind British settlers of home. Control measures have included Myxomatosis, cats (which had a disastrous effect on native species), and more recently Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease (originally called RCD) which causes blood clots in major organs.
