Engravings of ships figureheads from Ancient Etruscan and Roman times through to the 18th century, from The Graphic, 17th May 1890. This series gives some idea of the development of the figurehead and clearly shows the difference between the Roman bow made for ramming and the extremely ornate bow of Charles I's 'Sovereign of the Seas'.
