Photograph showing a steel and concrete 'Mulberry' caisson under construction on the South Coast of Britain during 1944. When the Allied Armies invaded Normandy in June 1944, they required the use of a port to unload supplies quickly. The Allied commanders decided to take a pre-fabricated port, made of caissons such as the one pictured, and build it at Arromanches Beach.
