Born in 1644, Guy completed his education and went on to represent Tamworth in Parliament. He moved to London and spent eight years as a bookseller's apprentice. Through his astute business sense he made his fortune with investments and printing. In 1704 Guy was appointed Director of St Thomas's Hospital and through his donations paid for three new wards. At the age of 76, he founded Guy's Hospital, on a site near London Bridge. He died four years later, leaving a large fund for the hospital.
