A sketch of the receiving house of the Royal Humane Society. The society was founded in 1774 by Dr William Hawes and Dr Thomas Cogan, to save people from drowning by using resuscitation. Awards were given to rescuers using this technique to successfully save a life. Receiving houses were built near stretches of water and were manned by volunteers to resuscitate drowning victims.
