Illustration showing the killing of an elephant, in the Jardin des Plantes, for food during the Siege of Paris in the winter of 1870-1. During the Siege of Paris many zoo animals and domestic animals were killed for food by the desperate Parisians and French army. The four month siege ended with French capitulation to the Prussians on January 28th 1871.
