Pike-headed rorqual whale being attacked by a local cottager on the north shore of Millbay Creek, River Dart, 1856. The whale had beached itself when the tide fell and the cottager was attempting to render a mercifully swift death after the animal had already been ashore for 8 hours. One can see the ruins of Dartmouth Castle on the left of this image.
