Princess Helena of Waldeck-Pyrmont, Duchess of Albany with her son, Prince Charles Edward of Albany (1884-1954). 'Charlie' was born posthumously. His father, Prince Leopold, who suffered from haemophilia, had travelled to Cannes in February 1884 to ease joint pain, a common symptom. On 27 March he slipped and fell in the Yacht Club in Cannes, injuring his knee and he died in the early hours of the next morning, apparently from the combined effects of morphine and claret. The news was a terrible shock to all the family, but especially Helen, who gave birth to Charlie on 19 July.
