James "Jim" Callaghan (Leonard James Callaghan, Baron Callaghan of Cardiff, 1912-2005), Labour politician, Chancellor of the Exchequer 1964-1967, Home Secretary 1967-1970, Foreign Secretary 1974-1976, and Prime Minister 1976-1979. Seen here at a Labour Party special conference on the common market, looking through a leaflet entitled 'The Common Market Re-Negotiations, An Appraisal'. In 1975 a referendum was held to decide whether the UK should stay in the EEC (EC), and Callaghan supported the 'Yes' vote.
