Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev (b 1931), Soviet leader, General Secretary of the Communist Party (1985-1991), last head of state of the USSR (1988-1991). Seen here with the British Conservative Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher (Margaret Hilda Thatcher, Baroness Thatcher, nee Roberts, 1925-2013) during a visit to the UK. Thatcher famously said of him: "I like Mr Gorbachev, we can do business together." The Cold War between East and West ended in 1989.
