ALBERT GRANT (1831-1899) (born Abraham Gottheimer) Irish born British company promoter. Established many companies which were to fail at the expense of the shareholders leading to claims of fraud. Became the Member of Parliament for Kidderminster in 1874 but was unseated later in the year when the courts found him guilty of obtaining the seat by bribery. In 1874 Grant purchased the enclosure of land that is now Leicester Square, handing it over to the Metropolitan Board of Works to be preserved for ever for the free use and enjoyment of the public. He died, bankrupt and in relative poverty. Caption: 'Leicester Square'
