Head and shoulders portrait of Leo Frankel, Hungarian born Marxist follower. After spells in Austria and Germany, he settled in Paris, where he was imprisoned for his political activities. Released following the 1870 revolution he helped to organise the uprising in the Paris Commune. When the Commune was overthrown he fled to London, before returning to Austria, from where he was extradited to Hungary. In 1878 he went back to Paris to work as Friedrich Engels assistant. He died in 1896 in Paris.
