Camp created by Germans in January 1917 in protest at French policy of keeping PoW's within 30 km of battle front (this was attested to by US Ambassador). 300 prisoners were kept in tiny compound and forced to work repairing roads and carrying supplies, often under French gun-fire. French finally complied and then prisoners sent to camps in Germany but not before many had died of typhus.
