Chemin des Dames. Fought over for most of the war it was the scene of bitter fighting 16 April - 15th May 1917 when Nivelle launched a disastrous offensive along a 40km front between Soissons & Reims. The French suffered 140,000 casualties in the first 4 days and many units then refused to contunue the assault French 155mm shell in woods.
