Capt Gerald Hugh Fitzgerald, 4th Dragoon Guards (Royal Irish) Age: 28 Killed 13th September 1914. The 4th Dragoon Guards reached the canal and River at Bourg which was defended by 25th Landfwehr Regiment - the road bridge over the river had been destroyed but the canal bridges were intact and the canal crossed the river by an aqueduct with towpaths wide enough for horses. The dragoons used this to charge across the river despite the attention of three machine guns - led by Lieutenant "Sambo" Sewell they charged with sabres drawn amd within five minutes had taken the bridges and village. Captain Fitzgerald was in charge of the Machine gun section and they rushed the bridge to establish a position from which they could provide supporting fire when he was shot.
