Jewish Shophar - The oldest wind instrument in present use in the world. Usually a simple ram's horn flattened by heat. First mentioned in the Bible when the Lord descended on Mount Sinai - and likely to have been in Mosaic service ever since. Still sounded in the synagogues on New Year and on the Fast of the Day of Atonement. Sir Edward Elgar used the Shophar in his oratorio 'The Apostles'.
