The first road race to be won by an engine powered by a straight-eiggt engine was the French Grand Prix of 1921 in which J Murphy averaged 78.1 mph for 322 miles at Le Mans. The car was a Duesenberg with a 3 litre engine giving 115 hp. The driver in this photograph is Joe Boyer
