Four female candidates for Parliament in the 1918 General Election, when women over the age of 30 were given the vote for the first time, and women could put themselves forward as electoral candidates. Portraits show, top left, Mrs Norah Dacre Fox, independent candidate for Richmond, top right, Miss Christabel Pankhurst, Women's Party candidate for Smethwick, bottom right, Mrs W. C. Anderson (Miss Mary MacArthur), Labour candidate for Stourbridge and bottom left Mrs Carruthers, Miss Violet Markham, Liberal Candidate for Mansfield, Notts. The Sketch writes that, 'by the time this number of "The Sketch" appears, all will know whether or not they may add the coveted, "M.P." to their names!' Sadly, not one of them won a seat.
