A cartoon illustration by Alfred Chantrey Courbold (1852-1920) of suffragettes swimming towards a flotilla of toy boats. Behind them are large Votes for Women banners whilst pro-suffrage leaflets rain down from a hot air balloon in the sky. This is reference to the attempt made by Muriel Matters to fly in an airship over the House of Commons in February 1909. She missed her target but released 6lbs of Women's Freedom League leaflets in the skies over London. 1909, original artwork by Alfred Chantrey Courbold.182.In the 'source' column, put Bernard Partidge 'after' Sie Edward Burne-Jones rather than re-work.
