The Chocolate Soldier is an operetta translated by Stanislaus Strange (1862?1917) from ?Der Tapfere Soldat? (German title) by Bernauer and Jacobson. It was composed in 1908 by Oscar Straus based on George Bernard Shaw?s play ?Arms and the Man?. First produced at the Lyric Theatre in London on 10th September 1910. Lt. Bumerli is a chocolate-eating soldier, more interested in saving himself than performing heroic deeds on the battlefield. Here we see Bumerli who lies in bed in Nadina?s boudoir, having climbed through the window to escape enemy troops. Nadina, Aurelia and Mascha peer down at him (Act I). Performed by George Dance's Company. Touring to the Assembly Rooms, Market Harborough on 27th September 1912.
