The Duke?s Motto by John Huntly McCarthy (1859 ? 20 March 1936), starring Lewis Waller (3 November 1860 ? 1 November 1915). First produced at the Theatre Royal, Birmingham, on 13th August 1908 and then at the Lyric Theatre, on 19th August 1908. ?Le Bossu? (?The Hunchback?) by Paul Feval has been often dramatised and filmed in France. Here it has been usually known as ?The Duke?s Motto?. In his novel of that name (1908), McCarthy acknowledged Victorien Sardou, whose play, however, seems not to have been produced. The artist is Chas A. Buchel (1872?1950).
