The site of the Broad Street pump whose infected water caused a cholera epidemic in 1854 marked by red granite kerbstone in Broadwick Street, Soho. Several hundred lives were lost. Dr John Snow, living locally and suspecting the pump water to be contaminated, immobilised the handle to prevent its use, thereby containing the disease.
