'Entombed miners.' Illustration showing the vivid idea of one of the dangers of collier's life. This scene was at Tynewydd pit, in the Rhondda Valley, Glamorganshire, northeast of Cardiff. Most miners had just finished their shift and were making their way towards the shaft to be raised, when there was a loud roar, suddenly they could hear rushing water, many miners forced to the bottom of the shaft due to the amount of water, walking through dark tunnels to their escape.
