Magic Lantern slide circa 1900 hand coloured. Titled Cities and places of interest in the Mediterranean. PORT NAPOLEON, VIEW IN THE HARBOUR. This gives us some idea of the enormous maritime trade carried on in the leading seaport of France. Into this harbour there come, almost daily, vessels from every part of the world, and ' here, in picturesque confusion, may be seen, rubbing shoulders with one another, the stalwart English tar, the ,effeminate Lascar, the gigantic Russian, and the wiry American. The tonnage of vessels entering and quitting Marseilles annually exceeds two millions, and the custom dues, are calculated at three million pounds. Close by the harbour are statues commemorating the most important navigators to whom Marseilles has given birth, amongst others Pytheas and Euthymenes, two ancient Greek sailors belonging to the original colony of Massilia.
