Coeliac disease. Endoscopic image of the small intestine of a patient with coeliac disease. Coeliac disease is a gastrointestinal autoimmune disorder caused by a reaction to gluten. It typically affects the small intestine and causes chronic diarrhoea, abdominal dissention and malabsorption. However, it has also been linked to skin disorders. Here, it is thought to be linked to erythema elevatum diutinum. Erythema elevatum diutinum is a form of vasculitis where blood vessels are destroyed as a result of inflammation.
