High Level Bridge, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Tyne & Wear, c1955-c1980. A view of the High Level Bridge spanning the River Tyne, with domestic and industrial buildings in the foreground, and a view of the south bank of the river in the background, seen from north-west of the bridge, at a high vantage. The bridge is a combined road and railway bridge, built by Robert Stephenson in 1849 with cast iron and ashlar, with the road on the lower beam, with segmental iron arches and beams supporting the railway above, as well as the five ashlar piers across the river. At the northern end of the bridge is a large round arch, and the southern end is supported by an iron cage on four iron columns. Behind the bridge the Swing Bridge and New Tyne Bridge can just be seen, as well as industrial buildings on both sides of the river.
