'Roberts Wins the Victoria Cross', (1901). British soldier Frederick Sleigh Roberts (1832-1914) was awarded the Victoria Cross for actions on 2 January 1858 at Khudaganj in Uttar Pradesh, India. He is depicted retrieving a British standard from two Sepoys: 'one of the men pulled the trigger, but fortunately the caps snapped, and the standard-bearer was cut down by this gallant young officer, and the standard taken possession of by him.' From "The Life and Deeds of Earl Roberts, Vol. I. - To The End of the Indian Mutiny", by J. Maclaren Cobban. [T. C. & E. C. Jack, Edinburgh, 1901]
