Human brain, illustration. The front of the brain is at left, in this view from the side. Seen here are the: frontal lobe (centre left), temporal lobe (centre), parietal lobe (upper centre), occipital lobe (centre right), brainstem (lower centre), and cerebellum (lower right). The brain is the nerve centre controlling bodily function and thought. It interprets nerve signals received from the rest of the body and initiates the appropriate responses. The folded surface is the outer part of the cerebrum, the region responsible for intelligent thought, language, conscious movement and memory. The folds, called sulci, increase the surface area, allowing more neurons and a larger brain capacity without increasing the volume of the brain.
