Computer generated conceptual illustration of synthetic bacteria. Synthetic bacteria have their natural genome replaced by DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) synthesised outside of the bacterial cell. The synthetic DNA contains functional genes that enable processes necessary for life, allowing the bacteria to survive and replicate. The first fully synthetic bacteria, named JCVI-syn3.0, were created in 2016 by Craig Venter and colleagues.
