The vocal cords (also called the vocal folds) are part of the human larynx (voicebox), which is in the lower part of the throat, and forms part of the upper respiratory tract. Air from the mouth and nose passes through the larynx to reach the lungs. Air passing out of the lungs resonates around the vocal cords to produce vocal sounds.
