'Friedrich von Hardenberg', (1933). Portrait of German writer Friedrich von Hardenberg (1772-1801) who wrote under the pen name Novalis. As well as his work as a poet, author and philosopher of Early German Romanticism, Hardenberg studied geology and mineralogy, and was involved in the industrialisation of the salt mines in Saxony.
