Oesophagus pH probe, illustration. This probe is used to measure the amount of stomach acid entering the oesophagus (gullet) from the stomach. It is positioned within 5 centimetres of the opening of the oesophagus into the stomach. The test is typically conducted over a 24-hour period. The results help to confirm or reject a diagnosis of GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease).
