Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 impacting Jupiter, radio images. Pair of radio images taken by the Very Large Array (VLA), showing the planet Jupiter before (left, 24 June 1994) and after (right, 19 July 1994) fragments of the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 impacted the planet. The disk of the planet is in the centre of the images. The bright red spots are regions high above Jupiter's 'surface' where electrons interacting with the planet's intense magnetic field are producing strong radio emissions. The powerful impact disrupted the planet's atmosphere and radiation belts, affecting the radio emissions as shown here. These images were obtained in L-band radio emissions.
