Deforestation in the Amazon, June 2019. These areas of deforestation (large area at upper left) are in the state of Rondonia in Brazil. Some of this deforestation is due to slash-and-burn agricultural practices, which have increased markedly in 2019. The fire season in the southern Amazon runs from June to November. Image obtained on 30 June 2019, by the MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer) instrument that is carried on NASA's Terra and Aqua satellites.
