Italy; Tuscany; Certaldo; Casa del Boccaccio: replica (reproduction) of the oldest exisitng portrait painting (14th century; unknown artist) of poet Giovanni Boccaccio (1313 - 1375). Poet Giovanni Boccaccio (1313 - 1375) was born and died in Certaldo and lived several periods of his life in this house of his family; especially the last two years of his life (1374 and 1375). Boccaccio was not only author of famous of The Decameron and a famous Renaissance humanist. He also wrote the Tractatus Geographicus and is seen today as one of the founders of modern geography. Navigators and sailors met him in this house. The casa del Boccaccio; today museum; shows costumes of the time of Boccaccio and ladies shoes of 14th and 15th century. As well; there is a section dedicated to Boccaccio as a geographer. Boccaccio; who was a friend of Petrarca; is shown as well on first floor one replica; a reproduction of the oldest existing portrait (14th century) of Boccaccio. In the "stanza del poeta" (room of the poet); there is a fresco by Pietro Benvenuti (1769 - 1844) who realized it in 1826. it shows Boccaccio at his working table. Casa del Boccaccio was bombed during an air raid on 15th of January; 1944; and rebuilt; until 1956.
