Great Britain (United Kingdom); Northern Ireland; Castlerock: Bishop`s Gate at Downhill Demesne and Mussenden Temple: The bishop`s Gate (view from the Black Glen) is one of two representitive entrances to Downhill Demesne. Downhill Demesne was built around 1774 by Earl Bishop Frederick Augustus Hervey (1730 - 1803); Bishop of Derry (Londonderry); 4th Earl of Bristol; as his country house. On the grounds; there is the mausoleum dedicated to his brother George Hervey. Downhill House; seat of the eccentric bishop; today is in ruins and under archeological survey. Art exhibitions; concerts ad readings are held on the grounds in Hezlett House. Most impressive is the park area which was as well used for the TV blockbuster Game of Thrones (GoT): Here; Melisandre gives away the seven idols of God of Westeros. Most impressiv is Mussenden Temple; built by the bishop; in 1783 - 1785 for his niece Frideswide Mussenden. The architcture was inspreid by the Bramante Tempietto at Jianiculum Hill in Rome; which as well got its inspriation from the antique Roman Vesta temple in Tivoli near Rome. Architect of Mussenden Temple was most probably Michael Shanahan. The temple should have been offically used as a library for the lady. But she died early. There is rumour about a love affair between the bishop and his niece who may have died depressed by hearing gossips about it. Today; Mussenden Temple can be used for marriages. The gothic style bishop`s gate is decoratesd with cow skulls and bishop`s mitra.
