This 200 cc bioplastic plate is made from theoretically 100% biodegradable and compostable polymers, derived from the dextrose (sugar) extracted from plant-based biomass. With the optimal composting conditions of industrial composters, the bioplastic takes 1 to 3 months to be converted into compost. Though in this case the polymer used is not named, most biodegradable plates are made from PLA (polylactic acid) plastic. In most cases biodegradable bioplastics will only break down in high-temperature industrial composting facilities. They can take more than 6 months in the average domestic compost bin at ambient temperatures between 20 and 30 degrees C. PLA plastics cannot be recycled along with standard petrochemical PET plastics the resulting contanimated recycled plastic products will have lesser quality and value.
