Kylemore Castle was built in 1868 as a private home by Mitchell Henry from London and his wife Margaret. They had discovered the land around during their honeymoon in mid 1840s and bought it. The castle was designed by James Franklin Fuller; aided by Ussher Roberts. The construction of the castle lasted four years; until 1872. The castle hadf 33 bedrooms; 4 bathrooms; 4 sitting rooms; a ballroom; billiard room; library; study; school room; smoking room; gun room; various offices and domestic staff residences for butler; cook; housekeeper and servants. There is as well a Gothic cathedral and the mausoleum containing the bodies of Margaret Henry; Mitchell Henry and a great grand-nephew. Margaret Henry died early during a holiday trip to Egypt. In 1920; the Irish Benedictine Nuns purchased the Abbey castle from the Duke and Duchess of Manchester; who had bought the castle; in 1909. The new Benedictine school became famous; but was closed; in 2010. The nuns monastery is still in use; but Kylemore Abbey has become a major tourist attraction; as well. On the estate; there are large walled Victorian Gardens and a replica of the Lourdes grotto.
