Kenelm Digby (1603-1665), English alchemist and physician. Digby helped to found the Royal Society in 1665 and published extensively including 'Of the Body and of the Soul' (1644) and 'Receipts in Physick and Chirurgery' (1668). Some of his published books are in the background at top right. He was continually distracted from science, serving as a soldier in the English Civil War, an ambassador, a maritime privateer and Chancellor to Queen Henrietta Maria (wife of Charles I). Digby also promoted a wound-curing powder (iron II sulphate) to be applied to an injured person's wounds. The recipe for this powder was obtained on his travels. This portrait is on a page from 'Receipts in Physick and Chirurgery'. It shows Digby aged 62, and names him as Chancellor to the Queen Mother.
