Antarctic ice shelf calving sequence. Running from top left to lower right, this sequence of six satellite images shows rifting and iceberg calving on the Amery Ice Shelf in Antarctica between 13 September and 2 October 2019. The iceberg that formed was named D-28 and measured 1636 square kilometres in area. Studies of calving events like this are helping to see how East Antartica is affected by global climate change. These images were obtained by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instruments on NASA's Aqua and Terra satellites.
