Male papaya tree, 18th-century illustration. This artwork shows the male flowers of this plant and dates from the period 1790 to 1800. It is from an album created by Major James Nathanial Rind (died 1814), a colonial officer known to have had a keen interest in flora and fauna. Between 1785 and 1789, he was based at Calcutta and was among the officers involved in a survey of India. The illustration is watercolour on paper.
