Bertillon recording scars for criminal records. French police officer Alphonse Bertillon (1853-1914) demonstrating part of the anthropometric system he had developed. Bertillon developed his identification system in 1883. Ten standard physical measurements were taken that could be used to identify criminals who gave false names. Measurements included height, length of right ear, width of head, and reach of the right arm, as well as unique identifying characteristics such as scars, tattoos and other marks (such as skin blemishes and moles). This system and its measurements were eventually replaced by fingerprinting. This albumen silver print shows a scene from around 1893.
