French Academies of Science and Fine Art, 17th century. The activities here are a mixture of those that took place at two different institutions in Paris, France: the Academie de Peinture et de Sculpture and the Academie des Sciences (the Academies of Painting and Sculpture and of Science). The Academie des Sciences was founded in 1666. The Academie de Peinture et de Sculpture was founded in 1648 and merged with the academies of music and architecture in 1816 to form the Academie des Beaux-Arts. This 1698 illustration, dedicated to King Louis XIV, is by French artist Sebastien Leclerc (1637-1714), who was a member of both Academies.
